Diesel at $6-Plus: Trump's Russia Fuel Deal Hits the Pump Debate

If you fill a work truck, a tractor, or a delivery van, you already feel this story in your wallet. National diesel hit a record high of $6.53 a gallon on Sept. 22, according to AAA figures reported by CBS News, and as of this week it was still about $6.27 a gallon, up from $3.73 in late February. That is the backdrop for President Trump's announcement that the United States struck a deal with Russia to put more diesel on the market.

What was announced

CBS News and the Associated Press report that Trump said on Oct. 9 Russia will immediately supply more than 300,000 tons of diesel, followed by 500,000 tons in November and 1 million tons after that. A White House official told CBS News the Treasury Department issued a license so Russia can sell diesel to the United States and the world. The same official said the aim is lower costs for American farmers, truckers, and other workers.

Pushback in Congress

The move has drawn fire from both parties. AP reports a bipartisan group of six senators on Sunday called on the administration to "immediately reverse course," arguing the United States should not give Russia a financial lifeline while the war in Ukraine continues. The Hill quotes Republican critics who warn a sanctions lift could embolden Moscow. Trump and his allies say the priority is bringing prices down before the Nov. 3 midterms.

Will the pump actually move?

Energy analysts interviewed by CBS News are skeptical that the volumes will cut U.S. prices much in the short term. They note Russian refining has been hit by Ukrainian strikes, that the pledged tons are modest next to global daily diesel use, and that Middle East disruptions still keep refined products well below prewar levels. Working folks already know diesel prices rip through food, lumber, and freight, and every dime at the pump lands on the people who keep the country moving.

Between takes, a producer spoke up

We were still rolling tape at MuddySouth Music when the diesel headlines came across a phone on the console. One of the producers had already spent the morning bouncing from taxes to turbo setups, and he took a long pause before he answered. Preachers swear Hell runs hot, he said, so tell me straight, is Heaven cold? He shrugged and admitted he does not carry every answer in his pocket, and he never claimed to. What he will stand on is this: good people have lived and died to keep this country moving, free, and under God, and that holds whether the news out of Washington is good or bad. Then the next take started. Busy day in the studio.
