Trump Rejects Iran’s Seven-Day Plan to Reopen the Strait of Hormuz

The biggest story in the country this weekend is coming out of the Strait of Hormuz. On Saturday, September 26, President Trump rejected a seven-day roadmap from Iran that Tehran said would reopen the strait and restart peace talks. Al Jazeera has the full report, and The Washington Post and Reuters are covering it too.
What happened
Iran's foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, announced the plan Friday at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. It was passed to Washington through Qatari mediators. Under it, the U.S. would release frozen Iranian funds, lift oil sanctions and end its naval blockade of Iranian ports. Iran said those steps could be done in four or five days, with the strait reopening and talks on a final agreement starting by day seven.
Talking to reporters at the White House before a trip to Tennessee, the President said Iran only wants a deal now because it is losing, and that the deal on the table was not acceptable. The Wall Street Journal, citing unnamed U.S. officials, reported that he told aides he expects a new bombing campaign after the November midterms. Araghchi answered that Iran had not yet heard anything official through the mediators, that it stands by its conditions, and that only a negotiated solution can end the standoff.
Why it matters down here
Iran closed the strait shortly after the war began on February 28, and attacks on ships have cut traffic through it sharply ever since. In peacetime, about a fifth of the world's oil and natural gas moves through that one stretch of water. So when talks stall over there, working people feel it over here: at the pump, on the farm, in the shop and on every long haul down the interstate.
