Red Diesel Hits the Highway: What Trump's Order Means for Truckers and Farmers

If you drive a rig or a tractor for a living, Monday night's news out of Nebraska was aimed at your fuel tank. At a campaign rally in Grand Island, President Trump signed an executive order that temporarily lets red-dyed diesel, the untaxed fuel normally kept for farm and off-road equipment, run on the highway. The White House announcement and its fact sheet lay out the order, CNN covered the signing, and Politico reported the plan that morning.

What the order does

Diesel is taxed by how it gets used. Highway diesel carries federal and state excise taxes, while fuel for farms, construction, and heating is dyed red and sold without them. Under the order itself, the IRS is told not to penalize highway use of dyed diesel from October 5 through December 31, 2026, and Treasury is directed to defer the federal tax on that fuel for the rest of the year with no interest or penalties. The White House puts the federal diesel tax at 24.4 cents a gallon, about $60 on a 250-gallon fill. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins put the combined federal and state savings at roughly $640 million.

Read the fine print

The key word is "defer." As written, the federal tax is pushed back, not erased, though the fact sheet says the administration will look for ways to cancel what is owed. State rules are separate; the order only encourages governors to follow along. CNN cited a ClearView Energy Partners count of ten states, Texas, Oklahoma, and Alabama among them, that eased dyed-diesel rules between September 23 and October 2, and a Reuters factbox says Louisiana is letting farmers and timber harvesters run it on the highway. Check your own state before you fill up red.

Why it lands down here

CNN tied the price spike to the war with Iran, attacks on Russian refineries, and export limits in China, and it is landing in the middle of harvest. In the South, diesel is the cost hiding inside every load of logs and every round bale. A quarter a gallon is real money to a one-truck outfit.

Back in the control room

Somebody carried the diesel story into the control room while a vocal take was getting comped, so we hit record and asked a MuddySouth Music producer for his read. He answered with a question he says keeps finding him: if Hell burns that hot, does Heaven run cold? He was quick to say he does not have an answer for everything. What he is sure of is that good, everyday people have lived and died for this country to keep it moving, keep it free, and keep it under God, and whether the next headline is a blessing or a gut punch, that is not changing. We wandered from taxes to turbos before the engineer waved him back in. Busy day in the studio.

Before you pull out

Here is my honest pitch. MuddySouth Music is planning the biggest round of outreach and fan get-togethers we have ever tried this year, and the people on our list are the first ones we tell when dates and details are ready. Fuel prices come and go; the front of the line does not. Put your name on the contact list right now, and pass this to a driver or farmer who needs the rundown. Thanks for riding along. Fill up smart and I will see you on the next one.
