Unlocking Country Music’s 35-Year Mystery: CyD Duncan and the Truth Behind "K13"

For over three decades, country fans have belted out the iconic refrain from John Anderson’s 1991 smash hit "Straight Tequila Night". Written by Kent Robbins and Debbie Hupp, the song tells the story of a bartender warning a newcomer about Sue—a brokenhearted regular nursing memories, salt, and lime in a dimly lit bar.
At the center of the story sat a single, mysterious line:
"She's headed for a straight tequila night... and K-13 is her favorite song."
To casual listeners, "K13" was just a clever alphanumeric placeholder. But artist CyD Duncan knew that classic 100-play and 200-play jukeboxes (like vintage Seeburg and Rowe-AMI units) didn't operate on random buttons—those codes mapped directly to physical 45 RPM vinyl slots.
Driven to crack the code, Duncan embarked on a multi-year investigation into 1980s country catalogs, physical jukebox grid logic, and the songwriting credits behind the track. Robbins passed away in 1997, but tracing the lineage back through Nashville's golden era revealed a crucial connection: country star Sylvia and her 1981 track "Heart on the Mend" (off the album Drifter).
The smoking gun lies right in Anderson’s lyrics, where the bartender slides change across the counter:
"Here's a glass and some quarters and change,
Maybe you can turn her love life around...
Just remember, heart on the mend..."
The bartender wasn't just offering advice—he was quoting the exact song playing from slot K13 on the jukebox. Inspired by this forgotten connection, CyD Duncan channeled the discovery into his own original song, "K13." Released under MuddySouth Music, Duncan's track bridges classic country lore with a fresh, raw edge, transforming a 35-year jukebox secret into a new anthem for modern listeners.
