Judge Halts $20 Million in Taxpayer-Funded Pro-Trump TV Ads

Sunday night a federal judge in New York put a hard stop on a $20 million slate of taxpayer-funded television ads that have been running for about two weeks. U.S. District Judge Jennifer Rochon ordered the Department of Homeland Security to cancel what was left of the buy, including spots that were set to air Sunday night, and she barred the administration from starting the campaign back up, as CBS News and POLITICO reported.

What the order says

According to CBS News, Rochon sided with a coalition that includes the nonpartisan watchdog Common Cause. Her temporary restraining order told the administration not to enter into, renew, or expand any agreement to develop or air the challenged ads for the two-week life of the order. POLITICO reports she also directed officials to tell contractor LMD Media, which handled the buy, to follow the ruling.

Where the money came from

CBS News says DHS tapped $20 million in taxpayer money for the ads. Court filings summarized by POLITICO put about $19 million of that into a national campaign set to run through Sunday on networks that included Fox, CNN, CBS, ABC, and ESPN. A senior DHS official told the court the funds came from money Congress made available for commemorating border-security efforts. Legal experts cited by CBS News have said the buy may have violated a federal ban on using appropriated money for publicity or propaganda.

Why working folks care

When twenty million dollars of public money goes into television spots that echo campaign messaging, people who punch a clock want a straight answer about the rules. That is not about picking a team. It is about whether the dollars that come out of our paychecks get spent the way the law says. Midterms are coming, the ads were already on the air, and a judge stepped in. Folks who keep the trucks rolling notice when tax money and politics share the same commercial break.

Between takes at MuddySouth Music

Midway through a session, we floated the ad ruling past one of the producers at MuddySouth Music. The interview had already covered everything from taxes to turbo, and the red light kept blinking. He rubbed his chin and asked a question that had nothing to do with cable news: if Hell is hot, is Heaven cold? He grinned and said he does not have all the answers to every question, and he will not pretend otherwise. What he hangs onto is plainer. Good people have been living and dying to keep this country moving, free, and under God, and that will stay true whether the news comes in good or bad. Then the next track called. Busy day in the studio.
